Linda Huey: Botanical Adaptations
April 26 – May 29, 2012
Reception May 3, 5:30-7:30pm
In a statement on our culture’s relationship with nature, Huey uses ceramics as her medium and with it sculpts a revelation of her concern for the environment. The recycled rebar she uses as stems for her oversized clay flowers inform the notion that natural elements are dependent on the industrial fixtures surrounding them. Her plants have a suggestion of beauty with a posture that is defensive, controlled and protected. Viewers are challenged to not only observe the initial beauty of these flowers, but to also understand the underlying issues manifested through them. These botanical representations serve to provoke discussion about the current status of the environment and investigate the ambiguous relationship we as a culture have with nature.

Toy With It
Michele L'Heureux
June 7 – August 17, 2012
Reception June 14, 5:30-7:30pm
Through the layering and manipulation of surface and materials, Michele’s work references the constant process of discarding, reviving, and recreating our identities. Intrigued by the fact that at any given time, certain fragments of our identities rise to the surface, Michele investigates the layers of ones identity and the attention that different elements of our identity seek. Within this framework, her paintings also explore ambiguity: how you can't always be sure what you're seeing at any given time, and particularly how it relates to gender. Her paintings and blocks examine--and attempt to dismantle--societal notions of gender as fixed and binary. Her work explores the mutability and performance of gender through the use of gender-laden symbols, marks, and images that are disrupted, layered, entwined, and partially occluded, creating ambiguous spaces where multiple meanings/identities can exist simultaneously.
